Mike Balcos’ US N scale model railroad is a freelance layout inspired by American railroading in the early 1980s. Rather than reproducing one exact railroad, route, or city, the layout brings together Amtrak passenger trains and Union Pacific freight equipment in a single operating scene.

Amtrak Phase I E8A Passenger Train
The first train is led by a streamlined Kato Amtrak Phase I E8A. It pulls three Minitrix Amtrak Phase I passenger coaches.
The locomotive’s rounded nose and the silver passenger cars give this consist the appearance of early Amtrak service. It also provides an interesting contrast with the more modern F40PH and Superliner train that follows it in the video.
Amtrak Phase III F40PH and Superliners
The second passenger train is led by a Kato Amtrak Phase III F40PH. Behind the locomotive are three Kato Amtrak Phase III Superliner passenger cars.
The F40PH, red-white-and-blue Phase III striping, and bi-level Superliners create a distinctly 1980s Amtrak appearance. This train is one of the layout’s most recognizable passenger consists.
Union Pacific GP15-1 Freight Train
The final train is a short Union Pacific freight led by an Atlas GP15-1 locomotive. It hauls four Atlas freight cars, with an Atlas caboose bringing up the rear.
The freight train provides a contrast with the two Amtrak passenger trains and adds another type of operation to the railroad. Its relatively short consist is appropriate for local freight, switching, or light road service on a freelance layout.
A Freelance Early-1980s Railroad
This model railroad is freelance rather than a reproduction of one particular prototype. It is inspired by real American trains and railroad operations, but Mike is free to combine equipment from different railroads and nearby periods.
This approach makes it possible to operate an Amtrak Phase I E8A, a Phase III F40PH with Superliners, and Union Pacific freight equipment while maintaining a generally early-1980s theme.
The combination of passenger and freight trains also creates more operating variety than a layout devoted exclusively to one railroad or type of service.
